New Covid variant ‘Eris’ found to escape immunity better than other strains

A recent study in the Lancet found that the Covid variant ‘Eris’ has a distinct advantage in infiltrating the defenses of vaccinated or previously infected individuals.

The EG.5.1 variant of Covid has been found to evade the neutralising antibodies and neutralising the defences of a vaccinated or previously infected individual, according to a Lancet study.

This gives the variant, commonly called ‘Eris’, a distinct advantage in infiltrating the defenses of vaccinated or previously infected individuals.

The research was published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal. Despite its evasion tactics, this variant’s ability to elude antibodies is only moderately enhanced, failing to fully undermine the robust immunity established through the phenomenon of hybrid immunity.

After examining the characteristics of EG.5.1, a team of researchers from the German Primate Centre in Gottingen, Germany found that while EG.5.1 does not exhibit heightened infectiousness compared to its predecessors, it excels in outwitting the immune system’s defenses. Thus, surpassing other circulating lineages of SARS-CoV-2.

This gives EG.5.1 the upper hand in infected individuals who have developed neutralising antibodies through vaccination or prior infection, confounding the well-laid plans of our immune protection.

These neutralising antibodies, made by the cells of our immune system, attach themselves to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, thwarting the virus’s intentions of infiltrating our cells.

This phenomenon, known as neutralisation, forms a crucial component of our immune system. Since its emergence in May of this year, the EG.5 lineage, including its descendant EG.5.1, has surged in numerous countries, earning the classification of a “Variant of Interest” by the World Health Organization (WHO).
