Tragic incident claims lives of two farmers in Indapur, Pune as they fall into deep tunnel

In a devastating incident on Wednesday evening, two farmers from Pune’s Indapur tehsil lost their lives after falling into a nearly 300-foot-deep tunnel associated with the Nira Bhima stabilisation project. The bodies were recovered by the rescue team late in the evening.

The unfortunate event unfolded when the farmers were attempting to lower a water pump into the tunnel to extract water. According to reports, they were using a locally manufactured tractor-mounted crane for the operation. Tragically, the rope broke during the process, causing both farmers to fall into the deep tunnel at around 5:30 p.m.

The Indapur tahsildar explained that the ongoing construction of the Nira Bhima Stabilisation Project involves the digging of a tunnel. Local farmers in the vicinity utilise the tunnel to lower pumps and extract water for their agricultural needs. The incident occurred during one such attempt, resulting in the fatal fall of the two farmers.
